Where the Money Goes...

The Komen Foundation keeps administrative and fundraising expenses low, and is primarily a volunteer-driven organization.  Of the proceeds raised by the Komen Portland Race for the Cure®, 75% remains in our local Oregon and SW Washington communities. The other 25% helps fund the Komen Grants Program for breast cancer research (none of this 25% pays for staff or administrative costs; all of it is designated solely for breast cancer research).

The 75% that remains in our community funds the following:

  • Komen Community Grants up to $20,000 to local organizations for projects that include breast health/breast cancer education and outreach

  • Free mammograms for individuals who aren’t otherwise able to afford them (in 2000 we gave approximately 4,000 potentially life-saving mammograms to people in need)

  • Mini-grants up to $2,500 to local non-profit organizations in support of breast health/breast cancer outreach and education programs

  • A wide variety of educational material and literature about breast cancer and breast health for the public and the medical community, etc.

  • Breast cancer survivor and educational activities.
