For
the 13th year the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Oregon
and Southwest Washington Affiliate celebrates the Komen Portland
Race for the Cure®. This year’s race will be held on September
19th in downtown Portland at Waterfront Park. Approximately 32,000
race participants competed in 2003, raising money for our mission
to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. We hope
for an even greater turn-out in 2004! None of this would be possible
without the generous support of nearly 1,000 volunteers. You make
the largest Race for the Cure® on the West Coast happen.
You may download the Race Volunteer Intake and Release below. It
outlines the volunteer opportunities available for the day of the
Race and Health Expo held at the Convention Center on September
17 and 18. Each volunteer, including youth, must fill out a volunteer
registration and release form. We are very fortunate to have many
volunteers interested in working with us at specific areas of these
events, but in reality have a limited number of slots available
at specific posts in each of the shifts. Therefore, volunteer assignments
are made on a first-received, first-assigned basis. We urge you
to respond promptly and list several choices of possible volunteer
options. Your help is needed in so many ways and in so many places
that we thank you in advance for your participation!
For reasons of security and liability, we have a minimum age of
15 for youth volunteers. If you wish to share your volunteer experience
with children under the age of 15, we must insist that each child
is accompanied by an adult. We are committed to keeping our participants
safe on this day of celebration and memoriam.
Teams and groups of volunteers are encouraged to participate at
the Race for the Cure®. If you have a group of people who would
like to contribute their energy and time for an important cause,
please contact the Komen Foundation office at 503.553.3676 for more
information.
You will receive confirmation of your race assignment in late August
or early September. Please feel free to make copies of the form
to pass onto other interested volunteers or direct them to our email
